“Celebrating Mom's Birthday: A Bittersweet Journey”

Join me on a heartfelt journey as we celebrate Mom's birthday, filled with sweet memories and a touch of bittersweet reflection.🍂

On my mom’s 40th birthday today, I greeted her one day before her birthday through a video call. Since my mom is an overseas Filipino worker (OFW), we can’t celebrate her birthday together. It’s sad to not be with your mother on special occasions, but I still understand because I know she’s only doing that for us. I miss her so much, and I know she misses us more.🥺 If I am sad, she’s more sad there. I wish my mom a happy birthday again at midnight. She requested that I go to Pitalo Church to do our tradition.⛪️

I am kind of sad because I am all alone, but she continued and said that I should go with Justine. I am so happy to hear that because even though my mom is not with me, I know someone is here for me and who is ready to join me in any situation.❤️

Morning came🌤️, I did all the household chores and I also did the laundry before going to Justine’s house.🧺 Since already haddy done everything, I took a rest for a minute and prepared myself. I left the house around 3 p.m. in the afternoon. I arrived at Justine’s house, and she was still not ready when I came. She is still on her phone because, as she said, they have no water. When their water had already come back, she took a bath, and I waited in their living room. When she was done, we departed from their home and quickly went to Pitalo Church because my grandmother said that the church would close at 6 p.m., and we left around 5 p.m.🕰️

Pitalo Church⛪️

We took a minibus for travel going to Pitalo Church.🚍 We arrived safely. We proceed to what we call “pamisahanan sa mga kalag,” or the feast of souls. I just give the list of pawns of separated souls; it’s up to you how much you will pay, and I pay 100 pesos because there are a lot of names.

After that we proceed to buy some candles for my mom’s request which is to do our tradition that when someone in our family celebrated a birthday we should go to Pitalo Church and do the what we call a “dagkot” like we buy candles and give it to a old lady then she will do the “pasinog” or pray for the person who celebrates their birthday. When she is done, she will give it back to us, and that’s the time that we will light the candles and make a prayer. I just bought candles worth 40 pesos.🕯️The line is so long, so we patiently waiting for our turn.

When we finished our prayers, we left the church and decided to go to the plaza and have some "isaw,” or fried chicken intestines, and of course, dynamite, my favorite, as well as Justine.

She said that we should spend a little time together to lessen my sadness, so I agreed because I also wanted to spend time with her and do a lot of "chikas,” our favorite part when we met. (HAHAHAHAHAHHA😅)

We ate while talking about some of the latest “chikas” that she missed. As always, our bond is full of laughter.😂 She never disappoints in making me happy within little things. She’s the kind of friend that is one call away; she will always be by your side, whether you’re at your worst or succeeding. She is a very supportive friend; that’s why I really love and cherish her so much.🫶🏻

I have a scheduled appointment where I will get my nails done. So, after those talking and eating moments, we go to the house where my nails will be done.💅🏻 I treated myself because I guess I deserve it after all.

After that bittersweet journey, we planned to head home.🏠

Even though your loved ones will not always be by your side, as long as they remain in your heart and you love them, you are ready to understand everything.💖
