Over the weekend, I worked on a project that's been on my list for a while now. I've been wanting to make a coconut planter cactus garden. My husband called it a nick-nack shelf.

I have been pulling weeds/grass in part of our yard for a long time, but I've had the pallet ready for months to make this little project. I wanted to finish one project before starting another, but over the weekend, I just couldn't pull another weed, so I started and finished this one!

About 1.5 years ago, we took a mission trip to the coast and I found a lot of these coconuts that had at least one hole in them, but they would still hold dirt, so I brought them home with this project in mind.

I started filling up the coconuts with dirt, small rocks, and cactus soil. Then I decided each coconut would have a different type of cactus in it, depending on the shape of the hole. I love how they all turned out and can't wait to see them as they continue to grow! I added the little "Mi casa es su casa" sign which I've had sitting on the rocks forever. I also like the leftover chain I had found at the $1 store for $.25 forever ago. My husband used a screw to hold it into the wall and he said I might need to wire each coconut to the shelf during windy season, so we'll see!

The little wooden shoe on top I found a long time ago in the street outside of our house. I have no idea where it came from, but I love it!

This was my inspiration for my coconut cactus shelf. I found it at a Mexican restaurant years ago when we visited the island of Bocas del Toro here in Panama. I've held on to this photo and thought for years until I could get it all to go together.

I like how their shelf has the dirt and plants in the pallet, but I didn't do my shelf that way! I think the coconut planters make it that much more interesting! It's right by our front door, so I hope that people notice it when they enter our house. Maybe they'll even think it's cool! Ha! What do you think? I need to get more nick-nacks to put on the top shelf with the shoe, right? 😉
