It is complete speculation as to when they first appeared. It is, indeed, not even known with any certainty what they are. All that is known that when they do manifest, they usually are accompanied by vast breakdown in order; both at a civilisation level, and at the level of recognisable natural laws.

There are theories which expound upon their nature, some of which pertain to other discussions regarding multiple and alternate realities.

Throughout history; particularly in this more modern cosmic epoch,there have always been proposed glimpses into "other worlds". These glances are always fleeting, at best, and usually sit uncomfortably alongside typical world paradigms expressed by the vast majority of sentient races. They are occasionally embraced by certain species and philosophies,but in the whole are relegated to the "tin foil hat" basket, to borrow a particularly colourful parlance used by the inhabitants of //67_8.
