The Whispering City of the Middle Ages: Kotor

Hello everyone. How are you? I hope you are well and may beauty find you. Today I’m continuing my favorite series. From my Balkans tour series, I’m here with Kotor, the pearl of the Balkans. After our Bosnia and Herzegovina tour ended, our destination was Montenegro. Now I want to tell you about our travel experiences. It was the third day of our Balkans tour and we arrived in a pearl-like town on the Adriatic coast early in the morning.🦪 Kotor is a charming city nestled between the steep mountain slopes and the unique blue of the Adriatic Sea.⛰️🏞️The moment I got off the bus, the salty, cool wind that hit my face seemed to mix the past and the present for a moment. 🌊The air of Kotor carried both the serenity of the Middle Ages and the joy of the Mediterranean.🌊

As we started walking through this medieval city, its narrow, stone-paved streets seemed to have maintained the same silence for centuries. Narrow stone streets, old houses leaning against each other, a completely different story around every corner... The moment we stepped into the city, the medieval atmosphere that surrounded us welcomed us with both a mysterious dream and a peaceful silence. It was like a city that seemed small at first glance, but grew larger as we walked in. According to our guide, the people of this city loved and valued cats very much. 🐈🐈‍⬛😺😻🐱 Indeed, there was a cat on every corner; some were lazing in the shade, others were wandering among the tourists. 🐈‍⬛🐈The people of the city are so used to the cats that no one drives them away, and they even put water and food bowls in front of some shops.🐾 Kotor’s cats aren’t just a cute detail, they’re like a part of the city’s soul. 😸According to our guide, the cats were brought here to control the increasing number of mice.🐀😾 However, over time, they not only chased the mice away, they also became the joy of the people and the color of the streets. 😸Another rumor says that when a fire broke out, the cats would jump over the city walls to warn people, and the fires were brought under control. 🔥🐈That’s why the people of Kotor started to see cats not only as “mouse catchers” but also as “protectors of the city”.

As you wander these unique, narrow stone streets, you might suddenly find yourself in front of a cathedral or church. The buildings are so close together that you might not even notice the grandeur of most of them.🏛️🏛️ St. Luke's Church was exactly that for us. We walked past it first, then walked back the same way and realized it was a place of worship. When we stepped inside, we escaped the noise of the city, only to feel the silence of the stone walls and ancient icons. The tiny space was barely big enough for five or six people to stand at a time. But the history inside was so dense that time seemed to slow down. Candlelight cast a soft glow on the icons.🕯️

Fortunately, there was no one there when we entered. After a careful look around, a few people came in to pray. We went outside so as not to disturb them. When we asked our guide about this small and welcoming church, he told us that it was one of the oldest places of worship in Kotor. He explained that it was used as a chapel for worship by both Catholics and Orthodox Christians in the Middle Ages. This demonstrates Kotor's tolerance. Its construction dates back to the 12th century, and its history is clearly ancient. Today, this chapel remains a historical and tourist attraction. Kotor's streets are so narrow and labyrinthine that any street could lead to any place at any time. Almost all the buildings are built in the same way and with the same grandeur. So, when our guide asked us on the bus if we had visited these places, we realized we hadn't seen the other magnificent churches in Kotor. I was particularly eager to see St. Tryphon's Cathedral.

After exploring around for a bit, we got hungry and ate Kotor's famous large slice of pizza and spaghetti bolognese. It was truly delicious. If you come here, you should definitely try the large slice of pizza. 🍕 Then, we climbed the stairs to the castle. As we went up, the blue of the sea glimmered between the stone houses. The stone walls whispered history with every step.🪨🪜💬 According to our guide, these walls, whose foundations have been laid since the 9th century, bear the traces of many civilizations and are approximately 4.5 kilometers long. We felt the cold yet majestic air of the Middle Ages with every stone. These walls were not only stone walls protecting the city, but also heirlooms carrying the memories of centuries.🗒️

*We also hosted a significant number of tourists during our trip. However, from what I've seen in the news recently, Montenegro now requires a visa. While this saddens me, I respect it. I actually felt lucky to have seen this beautiful, medieval city just in time. My disappointment stemmed from our plans to visit again soon. However, if we can secure a comprehensive visa in the future, Montenegro is one of the cities I'd love to see again. Thank you for reading this far. 🙋🏻Goodbye. 🌼

Orta Çağ'ın Fısıldayan Şehri: Kotor

Balkanlar turu serimden, Balkanların incisi Kotor ile karşınızdayım. Balkanlar turunda Bosna Hersek gezimiz bittikten sonra rotamız Karadağ diğer ismiyle Montenegro idi. Şimdi size gezimizdeki deneyimlerimizden bahsetmek istiyorum. Balkan turumuzun üçüncü günüydü sabahın erken saatlerinde Adriyatik'i kıyısında ki inci gibi bir kasabaya vardık.🦪 Kotor dağların sarp yamaçları ve Adriyatik Denizi'nin eşsiz maviliği arasında konumlanmış şirin bir şehir.⛰️🏞️Otobüsten iner inmez yüzüme çarpan o tuzlu serin rüzgar bir an için geçmişle bugünü birbirine karıştırmış gibiydi. 🌊Kotor'un havasında hem Orta Çağ'ın dinginliği hem de Akdeniz'in neşesi vardı.

Bu orta çağdan kalma şehri adımlamaya başladığımızda taş döşeli dar sokakları sanki yüzyıllardır aynı sessizliği koruyordu. Daracık taş sokaklar, birbirine yaslanmış eski evler, her köşede başka bir hikaye... Şehrin içine girer girmez insanı saran o Orta Çağ havası, bir yandan da gizemli bir rüya gibi bir yandan da huzurlu bir sessizlikle karşılıyordu bizi. İlk bakışta küçük gibi görünen ancak içine girdikçe büyüyen bir şehir gibiydi. Rehberimizin söylediğine göre, bu şehrin insanları kedileri çok sever ve onlara çok önem verirmiş. 🐈🐈‍⬛😺😻🐱Gerçekten de her köşe başında bir kedi vardı kimi gölgede miskin miskin yatıyor kimi turistlerin arasında dolaşıyordu. 🐈‍⬛🐈Şehir halkı kedilere öyle alışmış ki kimse onları kovmuyor hatta bazı dükkanların önüne su ve mama kapları konulmuştu.🐾 Kotor'un kedileri sadece sevimli bir detay değil şehrin ruhunun bir parçası gibiydi. 😸Rehberimizi anlattığına göre buraya kediler artan fare sayısını kontrol altına almak amacıyla getirilmiş.🐀😾 Ancak zamanla sadece fareleri kovmakla kalmamış halkın neşesi, sokakların rengi haline gelmiş. 😸Yine bir hikayeye göre de yangın çıktığında kediler surlardan atlayarak insanları uyarıyormuş ve yangınlar kontrol altına alınıyormuş. 🔥🐈Bu yüzden Kotor halkı kedileri sadece "fare avcısı" değil "şehrin koruyucuları" olarak görmeye başlamış.

Bu eşsiz, taş dar sokaklarda gezerken kendinizi bir anda bir katedralin ya da kilisenin önünde bulabilirsiniz. Yapılar birbirine o kadar yakın ki çoğu yapının görkemini fark etmeye bilirsiniz bile.🏛️🏛️ St Luke's Church da bizim için tam olarak öyleydi. Önce önünden geçip gittik daha sonra aynı yolu tekrar geçtiğimizde buranın bir ibadet yeri olduğunu fark ettik. İçeri adım attığımızda şehrin gürültüsünden sıyrılıp sadece taş duvarların ve eski ikonaların sessizliğini hissettik. O küçücük alan ancak beş-altı kişinin aynı anda durabileceği kadar genişti. Ama içindeki tarih öylesine yoğundu ki zaman adeta yavaşlıyordu. Mum ışıkları ikonaların üzerine hafifçe aydınlatıyordu.🕯️Şansımıza biz içeri girdiğimizde kimse yoktu etrafı dikkatlice seyrettikten sonra birkaç kişi ibadet için geldi. Biz de onları rahatsız etmemek için dışarı çıktık. Rehberimize bu ufak ve sıcak kilise ile ilgili soru sorduğumuzda Kotor'da ki en eski ibadet noktalarından olduğunu söyledi.Orta Çağ'da hem Katolikler hem de Ortodokslar tarafından ibadet edilen bir şapel olarak kullanılmış olduğunda söyledi.🔔⛪Bu da Kotor'un ne kadar hoşgörülü bir şehir olduğunu göstergesi. Yapımı ise 12 yüzyıllara dayanıyormuş. Oldukça eski bir tarihi olduğu belliydi. Günümüzde ise bu şapel daha çok tarihi ve turistik bir yapı olarak varlığını koruyor. Kotor'un sokakları o kadar dar ve labirent gibi ki her sokak her an her yere çıkabilir. Neredeyse tüm binalar aynı biçimde ve aynı ihtişamla yapılmış. Bu yüzden Kotor da bulunan diğer görkemli kiliseleri görmediğimizi rehberimiz otobüste şuraları şuraları gezdiniz mi diye sorduğunda anladık. Özellikle St. Tryphon Katedrali'ni görmeyi çok isterdim.

Etrafı epey keşfettikten sonra acıktık ve Kotor'un meşhur büyük dilimli pizzalarından ve bolonez spagettisinden yedik. Gerçekten çok lezzetlilerdi. Şayet buraya gelirseniz büyük dilimli pizzadan mutlaka yemelisiniz. 🍕 Daha sonra şehrin içine doğru uzanan merdivenlerinden kaleye çıktık. Yukarı doğru tırmandıkça taş evlerin arasından denizin mavisi göz kırpıyordu. Her adımda tarih fısıldıyordu taş duvarlar.🪨🪜💬 Rehberimizin anlattığına göre 9. yüzyıldan itibaren temelleri atılan bu surlar pek çok uygarlığın izini taşımakta olduğunu ve yaklaşık 4,5 kilometre olduğunu söylemişti. Her taşında Orta çağ'ın soğuk ama görkemli havasını hissettik. Bu surlar, yalnızca şehri koruyan taş duvarlar değil aynı zamanda yüzyılların anılarını taşıyan hatıralardı.🗒️

Bizim gezimiz sırasında da oldukça yoğun turist ziyaretine ev sahipliği yapıyordu. Ancak son günlerde haberlerden gördüğüm kadarıyla Karadağ'a artık vize uygulaması gelecekmiş bu duruma üzülsemde saygı duyuyorum. Aslında kendimizide bu konuda şanslı hissettim gerçekten tam zamanında gitmişiz ve Orta Çağdan kalmış gibi hissettiren bu güzel şehri görmüşüz. Üzülmemin sebebi aslında yakın bir tarihte tekrar ziyaret etme planlarımızın olmasıydı. Ancak ilerleyen zamanlarda geniş çaplı bir vizeye sahip olabilirsek Karadağ tekrar görmek istediğim şehirlerden birisi. Buraya kadar okuduğunuz için teşekkür ederim. 🙋🏻Hoşça kalın. 🌼
