Clean to be safe.

"Cleanliness, they say, is next to godliness." There is a reason for this statement. In fact, where I'm from, it's a proverb that stresses the importance of hygiene in our daily lives. It suggests that keeping clean is a virtuous and moral act that is essential not only for spiritual well-being but also for our mental and physical health.
The origin of this phrase is often attributed to John Wesley, an 18th-century English theologian and founder of Methodism. To John, cleanliness was an important aspect of living a holy and righteous life. Moreover, like many cultures and religions, where cleanliness has been tagged a sacred duty, it's a great reminder that our bodies and environments are temples that deserve respect, care, and utmost attention.
Personally, cleanliness is a mental booster. I remember when I was working in another state. It was just my daughter and I, with no form of external help, and that was one frustrating period for me. At a point, I started losing touch with my surroundings, and keeping tidy was the least of my priorities. I had no time for cleanup because, by the time I was coming back home with my daughter at the end of the day, I was already exhausted. Similarly, in the mornings, I was rushing for the school run and work. At a point, I started dreading my home because of the littered clothing and cluttered nature.
You might wonder why I didn't just clean up on Saturdays. Well, I worked till Sundays and could only do so much. At a point, I was drowning and needed help. So, immediately my mom told me that she was coming to spend some time in my home, it felt like the burden of the world had been lifted off my shoulders. And when she eventually came, it was a game-changer. I was always coming home to a clean environment, and whenever this happened, there was this sort of joy that I felt, making it seem like I was walking in sunshine. A feeling that cleared the heaviness in my heart and became a breath of fresh air dissolving the hovering dark clouds.
I didn't know how effective my mom helping me clean was until I noticed my work performance improved. Not only that, but I actually felt lighter and happier. I went from running away from my home to looking forward to being home. Yeah, the new me recognized home as a safe haven due to its tidiness. All thanks to my mom.
While it's possible to survive in a dirty environment, it's frustrating living in one. In fact, it's not ideal for several reasons, which include:
Health risks: A dirty environment is a direct ticket to the hospital. This is due to the presence of harmful bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can cause illnesses.
Mental health: Dirty environments are mental triggers, which I had a firsthand experience with. Aside from my own experience, it is a fact that living in a dirty environment contributes to our stress levels, creates anxiety, and keeps one depressed.
Quality of life: Do you know that a dirty environment can make everyday life uncomfortable and unpleasant? Well, you already read my experience on this, so I won't overemphasize.
In conclusion, the importance of a clean environment can never be overrated. It's essential for each and every one of us to strive for a clean and healthy living environment to maintain physical and mental well-being.
