Desde nuestra más tierna juventud, pintar nunca ha sido lo nuestro. Recuerdo que las tareas de la escuela las hacía yo, pero le "delegaba" a mi madre todo lo relacionado a dibujar. Vaya usted a saber el porqué de esa animadversión estando tan pequeño (cuando lo natural es el que un niño se deshaga con brochas, pinceles, pinturas y demás), lo que si es cierto, jamás alimenté esa parte de "hacer" más que la de "apreciar" ¿Cómo así? Bueno, la verdad es que siempre me ha gustado el arte, pero solo ver y apreciar más que cualquier otra cosa relacionada. Quienes me siguen quizás no lo sabían, pero lo que si saben es que tengo de visita en casa a mi hijo @stow01, un artista consumado. Fue a él a quien se le ocurrió hacer una "Painting Party" e invitar a sus amigos. Salió antier a comprar los lienzos, las pinturas al frío, los pinceles, los marcadores y otros periquitos relacionados con la tarea que íbamos a desarrollar. No estoy familiarizado con el concepto, pero en el mundo del arte, éstas fiestas son muy regulares y forman parte de la socialización entre personas que aprecian tal actividad.

Painting has never really been my thing—not since our earliest childhood. I remember doing all my schoolwork myself, but I would delegate anything that involved drawing straight to my mother. Who knows why that aversion showed up so early, especially when it’s natural for a child to go wild with brushes, paints, and all that mess. What’s certain is that I never nurtured the “doing” side of art—only the “appreciating.” What do I mean by that? Well, truth is, I’ve always loved art, but mostly as a spectator. Maybe my followers didn’t know that, but what they do know is that my son @stow01, a seasoned artist, is visiting me at home. It was his idea to host a “Painting Party” and invite some friends over. The day before yesterday, he went out and bought canvases, cold paints, brushes, markers, and all the little bits and pieces needed for the creative session we were about to dive into. I’m not familiar with the concept myself, but in the art world, these gatherings are quite common—they’re part of the social ritual among people who genuinely enjoy the craft.

Otra de las características de éstas fiestas es que se comparte comida y bebida. Mejor aún cuando quienes se presentan contribuyen de algún modo. No le hice muchas preguntas a él, pero también salió a comprar chucherías y licor, para aderezar la velada. La actividad se desarrolla más o menos así: cuando el grupo asistente no es experimentado, el artista (en nuestro caso @stow01) guía a todos respecto al objeto a dibujar. Puede ser alguno que él proporciona (en nuestro caso él propuso cuatro objetos: un arcoíris, un cactus, una flor y un pato en un estanque) o cualquier otra propuesta de los propios participantes. En nuestro caso y dado que estamos ligados al mundo cripto, se nos ocurrió dibujar el símbolo del Bitcoin con un rayo amarillo indicando que la criptomoneda en cuestión, sube a la luna (un argot propio del mundo cripto cuando el mercado se dispara). Así las cosas, procedimos a dibujar cada participante el bosquejo de lo que luego rellenaríamos con color.

Another hallmark of these gatherings is the sharing of food and drink. Even better when guests pitch in somehow. I didn’t ask him too many questions, but he also went out and bought snacks and liquor to spice up the evening. The activity unfolds more or less like this: when the group isn’t made up of seasoned painters, the artist—in our case @stow01—guides everyone through the object they’ll be painting. It can be something he suggests (he offered four options: a rainbow, a cactus, a flower, and a duck in a pond) or something proposed by the participants themselves. In our case, since we’re tied to the crypto world, we came up with the idea of painting the Bitcoin symbol with a yellow lightning bolt shooting upward—crypto slang for when the market takes off and the coin “goes to the moon.” So we each sketched out the design we’d later bring to life with color.

¿Recuerdan les conté delegaba en mi madre lo de dibujar? Bueno, el trazo de nuestro boceto tuvo todas las características inequívocas de quien es inseguro dibujando: líneas torcidas, curvas desproporcionadas, aspecto tridimensional con las luces y las sombras invertidas, en fin, un desastre de proporciones bíblicas. Aún así, el artista nos alentaba a continuar adelante y ese sentido, pude conectar con el espíritu de la actividad: pasarla bien no importando los resultados. Una vez listos los bocetos, llegó el momento de los pinceles. Indicaciones del artista sobre como manejar los colores, la pintura, los trazos sobre el lienzo y otros trucos con el fin de no morir en el intento. Quizás fue la parte que más disfruté porque es menos demandante para mí, rellenar que trazar. Además, una bandeja de pastelitos y tequeños que sabían a cielo, puso el alma en su lugar. Un vino con buen maridaje pero combinado con "Sprite", hizo las veces de "tinto de verano" para la ocasión.

Remember I told you I used to delegate drawing to my mother? Well, the sketch I laid down had all the unmistakable traits of someone insecure with a pencil: crooked lines, disproportionate curves, a three-dimensional look with lights and shadows flipped upside down—in short, a disaster of biblical proportions. Still, the artist encouraged us to keep going, and in that spirit, I connected with the essence of the activity: having fun regardless of the outcome. Once the sketches were done, it was time for the brushes. The artist gave us tips on how to handle the colors, the paint, the strokes on the canvas, and a few tricks to avoid crashing mid-flight. That might’ve been the part I enjoyed most—filling in is far less demanding for me than sketching. And then came a tray of pastelitos and tequeños that tasted like heaven, grounding the soul right where it belonged. A well-paired wine, mixed with Sprite, played the role of a summer red for the occasion.

A medida que íbamos culminando, el artista nos entregó indicaciones para la finalización de la "obra" y después de allí, cada asistente firmó su trabajo. Después de apreciar las pinturas de todos, cada quien habló sobre lo que produjo en sí mismo la actividad, antes de justificar el porqué habían elegido el tema de su pintura. Las palabras finales fueron muy emotivas, porque digamos que la reunión sirvió como una despedida de @stow01 con sus amigos residentes en Maracay. @aventurerasbike también participó y aparece en las gráficas con su obra. @stow01 no aparece fotografiado acá porque no es de los que le gusta aparecer en redes, dado el halo de misterio que gravita sobre él. En las imágenes también pueden ver el proceso de boceto y pintura de éste servidor y las obras finalizadas de los participantes ¿lo haría de nuevo? ¡Por supuesto que sí! Fue algo hermoso y nos hizo conectar con nuestro niño interior. As we wrapped up, the artist gave us final instructions to complete our “masterpieces,” and then each participant signed their work. After admiring everyone’s paintings, we each shared what the experience stirred within us, before explaining why we had chosen our particular subject. The closing words were deeply emotional, as the gathering also served as a farewell for @stow01 and his friends from Maracay. @aventurerasbike joined in and appears in the photos with her piece. @stow01 isn’t pictured here—he’s not one to show up on social media, preferring to keep that aura of mystery around him. In the images, you’ll also see this humble narrator’s sketching and painting process, along with the finished works of the other participants. Would I do it again? Absolutely.
