The Belief Of Feeling Entitled

We live in a society where we feel entitled to things, often this feeling of entitlement is spotted in friendships, relationships, family, and even from the
. A habit of this kind puts strain on such relationships and in most cases, one party suffers from being the host and the other a parasite.I have a weakness of wanting to give and be of help, I feel good being the giver than the receiver but often such kindness gets taken advantage of.
Family
My dad had a habit of ruffling my hair, it was a sign I need a haircut whenever he does that as a teenager growing up. One day he ruffled my hair saying;
Nothing is free out there, if you want something you have to earn it, don’t accept gifts from strangers and always be content with what we provide for you at home…
Perhaps naturally I do not expect to be given things, I was one of those kids that wouldn’t accept even chocolate from peers growing up and when it comes to being content with what I have, I’d like to think it is natural aside from my dad’s advice.
It is common to be taken advantage of in families, knowing families are dear to us, saying no is difficult and the one(s) trying to rise
to be independent takes the strain of consistent demand for help.Relationships
When we look at entitlement in relationships, the behaviors can be shocking. These relationships could be of any form, dating, platonic, or just mere friends. There should be limits to what is expected to be free from relationships.
The exchange of gifts and rendering of assistance in relationships should be of free will and mutual and if it has to put a strain consistently on one party’s pocket, then there is the feeling of entitlement at play which calls for a re-accession of the relationship. I am experiencing this of late and it is shockingly infuriating.
Government
We expect services to be delivered by the government, haven vote them into offices to serve us, while governments have an operating mind of their own there are certain things we should go out there and get done for ourselves.
Waiting on the government to provide free housing when you can work to rent or plan towards buying a house for yourself is feeling entitled. Being an adult and choosing to be a baby of the state is not a condition anyone should be thinking of.
We can take up the lowest of
to put a meal on the table and support ourselves instead of waiting on the government to provide jobs.We don’t have to look further to spot this entitlement behaviors in areas of our lives, even on
creating content doesn’t translate to us being entitled to upvotes, when content does well with upvotes, great and if it doesn’t so be it, we move on to the next one.Life should be a balance of give and take, nothing is free unless it is given freely.
