There are places that not only call us to rest or to the carefree stroll, but also call us to stop, and to contemplate their surroundings. Such is the case of Prado Promenade, one of the most emblematic spaces of Old Havana.

If you ever walk along this Boulevard, do not limit yourself to crossing it. Take a moment to look up and imagine how these buildings looked in their best times and feel the passage of history.

Prado Promenade is much more than a park to walk or sit and rest. It is also an open-air space that becomes a place to contemplate up close the architecture and culture of the city. Many of its buildings, thanks to restoration work, still preserve the elegance and splendor of other eras. Each section reveals a different moment in the history of Havana.

Along this wide boulevard, there are a large number of marble benches. These are not just simple objects to sit and rest on, they are seats from which we become privileged observers, witnessing the life that unfolds. Children running, street artists displaying their art, or street vendors offering their goods, all under the majestic sculptures of the bronze lions, motionless guardians of the park, and among the facades of the colonial buildings that line the surroundings of the avenue.

On each side of the street, one can appreciate how the passage of time has gradually altered the urban architecture. The surroundings of the so-called "Park of the Lions," as it is also known, feature diverse and varied constructions, apartment buildings, shops, and hotels with distinctive colonial architecture such as wide portals, ornamental balconies, stained glass, and facades from other eras. Although many are worn by the passage of time, they retain elements that reveal their former nobility; towering columns, wrought-iron grilles, molded ceilings, details that make this a charming city, where time enhances rather than conceals.

It is precisely the variety of styles and designs that make this place more than just a stroll. From here, one can see such distinctive buildings as the National Capitol, the majestic Alicia Alonso Grand Theatre of Havana with its towers crowned by angels; the legendary Hotel Inglaterra, one of the oldest in the country, and at the central intersection of Prado and Neptuno, the Hotel Telégrafo with its distinctive blue-and-white facade.

In contrast to the colonial architecture surrounding this same promenade are some much more modern hotels, such as the Gran Packard or the Manzana Kempinski, which, far from disrupting the harmony, add to the architectural and visual diversity. It is this blend of the old and the new that enhances the beauty of every space in Old Havana.

Despite the passage of time, Prado Promenade remains a symbol of Havana’s identity and a distinctive landmark in the city’s urban architecture.

Hay lugares que no solo nos convocan al descanso o al paseo despreocupado, sino que además nos llaman a detenernos, y a contemplar su entorno. Tal es el caso del Paseo del Prado, uno de los espacios más emblemáticos de La Habana Vieja.

Si alguna vez caminas por este Paseo, no te limites a cruzarlo. Tomate un momento para levantar la vista e imagina cómo lucían estos edificios en su mejor época y siente el paso de la historia.

El Paseo del Prado es mucho más que un parque para caminar o sentarse a descansar. Es además un espacio al aire libre que se convierte en un lugar para contemplar de cerca la arquitectura y cultura de la ciudad. Muchas de sus edificaciones, gracias a las labores de restauración, aún conservan la elegancia y el esplendor de otras épocas. Cada tramo revela un momento diferente de la historia de la Habana.

A lo largo de este amplio bulevar hay gran cantidad de bancos de mármol. Estos no son simples objetos donde sentarnos a descansar, son asientos desde donde nos convertimos en observadores privilegiados, presenciando la vida que transcurre. Niños corriendo, artistas callejeros que exhiben su arte, o vendedores ambulantes que ofrecen se mercancía. Todo bajo las majestuosas esculturas de los leones de bronce, inmóviles vigilantes del parque, y entre las fachadas de las edificaciones coloniales que se encuentra a ambos en los alrededores de la avenida.

A cada lado de la calle, se puede apreciar cómo el paso del tiempo ha ido modificando la arquitectura urbana. El entorno del llamado “Parque de los Leones”, nombre por el que también se le conoce, tiene construcciones de diversas y variadas, edificios de apartamentos, comercios y hoteles con los distintivos arquitectura colonial, amplios portales, balcones ornamentados, vitrales y fachadas de otras épocas. Aunque muchas están desgastadas por el paso de los años, conservan elementos que revelan su antigua nobleza, columnas altísimas, rejas trabajadas, techos con molduras, detalles que hacen de esta una ciudad encantadora, que el tiempo que embellece en lugar de ocultar.

Es precisamente la variedad de estilos y diseños lo que convierten a este sitio en algo más que un paseo. Desde aquí se pueden ver edificios tan distintivos como el Capitolio Nacional, el majestuoso Gran Teatro de La Habana Alicia Alonso con sus torres coronadas por ángeles; el legendario Hotel Inglaterra, uno de los más antiguos del país, y en la céntrica intersección de Prado y Neptuno, el Hotel Telégrafo con su distintiva fachada azul y blanca.

En contraste con la arquitectura colonial de los alrededores de este mismo Paseo se encuentran algunos hoteles mucho más modernos como son el Gran Packard o el Manzana Kempinski, que lejos de romper la armonía se suman a la diversidad arquitectónica y visual. Es esta mezcla de lo antiguo con lo moderno lo que refuerza la belleza de cada espacio en la Habana Vieja.

A pesar del paso del tiempo el Paseo del Prado continúa siendo símbolo de identidad habanera y un sitio que representa un punto distintivo en la arquitectónica urbana de la Habana.
