One of my all-time favourite movies was American Pie that was released on year 1999. It's about a group of kids aiming to lose their virginity before starting college in this romantic comedy.

One of the songs on the soundtrack that I enjoy and that reminds me of what the movie represents is "Sway by Bic Runga."

The melodic beat and music will always be the first thing that strike my ear when I select my favourite song. I'll then read the song's lyrics to discover its narratives.

When I was in Labuan Federal Territory, Malaysia in the years 2019–2000, me and my band last performed this song cover live in a bar called Popin Fun Pub & Beyond 2000.

I was singing with my old band, The Green Fire Band but the band has not yet reformed because the most of us have created our own bands and have gone our separate ways.

At that very time, American Pie was released (1999). And I have to admit, that movie has a lot of impact especially to those who are at least 18 years and above, if you get what I mean? 🔞 (If you did watch the movie, you will know what I meant)

Although I don't particularly recall the song being connected to any specific life events, I do recall that every time we played that cover, it had the most requests. Because of the soothing melody and attention-grabbing bass notes in that song, I adore it up until now.

I've always felt calm once I hear that song. My heart and soul will sway to the music as I feel at ease. The lyrics may mean something to someone, but not to me. The lyrics are pasted below for your reference.

My own interpretation of the song suggests that it is much simpler than you might think: A girl falls in love with a boy, but she's not sure how to confront him. She repeatedly bumps into him by mistake and sees him from a distant. She hopes he will notice her and become interested in her.

"I'm practicing your name so I can say it to your face", display of how she keeps reminding herself of his name so that if they meet, she can call him by name, but she freezes every time she looks at him.

It is clear from the words "It doesn't seem right, to look you in the eye," that she even finds it hard to stare at him. She wants to confess her love for him, but she is unsure on how to do so.

Many people have probably experienced this difficulty when attempting to approach a stunning woman or handsome man they have spotted in public or when trying to approach their high school crush.

These lyrics, has nothing to do with sex, a one-night stand, or any other topic. It's only about how challenging it might be to try to talk with someone you've been in love with.
