A Family Visit to Vatican City: A Humbling Summer Experience

After multiple trips to the Rome area over the years, our family finally made it to Vatican City for a full tour—and it was absolutely worth the wait.

This was our third time visiting the region, and in the past, we could never quite align the time, energy, or budget to make the most of what the Vatican has to offer. The timing always felt off, and navigating the high demand for tours often made it feel like a stretch. Ironically, this year was even more complicated with the added draw of the Jubilee Year, bringing in even larger crowds as pilgrims from all over the world make their way to Rome for spiritual reflection.

Yet despite the heightened demand, we lucked out. Thanks to a helpful connection, we were able to secure a comprehensive tour that included the Vatican Museums, the awe-inspiring Sistine Chapel, and the heart of it all—St. Peter’s Basilica.

One of the biggest perks of doing the tour was bypassing the endless lines. Tour operators have skip-the-line privileges in most areas, and the difference was immediately clear. Instead of losing time to waiting, we were able to focus on the experience itself, absorbing the art, the architecture, and the history without stress or exhaustion.

Having that structure in place allowed us to finish the tour in great time, leaving room to explore the surrounding areas at a slower pace. We reflected, we wandered, and yes—we shopped. But more than anything, we observed. Even with the highly touristic environment, there was a palpable sense of reverence among many visitors. People weren't just there for sightseeing; some were clearly in search of something deeper, something divine.

For me, it was a reminder of how layered the world is—how history, faith, and humanity come together in a single space. It reaffirmed my commitment to daily gratitude. Life is complex, and people are carrying all kinds of stories and hopes with them. Experiences like this one ground me and give me perspective, especially during times of global uncertainty and change.

As our trip continues, I know this part of the journey will stay with us for a long time.
