Summer 2025: Our Return to Italy – Slowing Down and Soaking It In
0 comments

In the past, our visits to Italy were typically part of a larger cruise itinerary. While those cruises gave us wonderful glimpses of several iconic cities, we often felt rushed. We missed out on some of the magic—long lines, inflexible schedules, or just not finding the right local tour would sometimes limit our adventures. We always left feeling like there was more we wanted to do… and this year, we’re finally making that happen.
Instead of cruising in and out, we’ve planted ourselves in Italy. We're taking our time, soaking in the daily rhythm of local life, and giving ourselves the space to explore on our own terms. We’ve already been enjoying the flexibility this trip offers. From trying local cafes in the morning to taking unplanned detours into towns we’ve never heard of, the slower pace is exactly what we’ve been craving.
We even took the plunge and rented a car—something that can be nerve-racking on Italy’s famously narrow streets—but the ability to explore at our own pace is worth it. At the same time, we’re planning to leverage the country’s excellent rail system to easily move between major cities and scenic regions. It’s a hybrid travel strategy that’s already proving to be a win.
One new element of this trip is a bit unexpected: we’re actually taking a look at real estate. After years of visiting and falling in love with Italy, we’ve started to wonder if there’s a place for us here in our golden years. Whether that means a part-time getaway or something more permanent, we’re staying open-minded and curious.
This trip is all about reconnecting with the places we’ve loved in the past and discovering new favorites along the way. No tight schedules, no rushing from port to port—just us, the road (or rail), and a whole lot of Italy to explore.
We’re excited for what lies ahead and what this trip might inspire for our future. One thing is certain: Italy continues to capture our hearts, and this summer may just be our most memorable visit yet.
