The city where I live is one of the few provincial capitals crossed by Cuba's Central Highway. This artery begins in Havana and ends in Santiago de Cuba, and was completed in the first decades of the last century. Kilometer Zero is marked by the National Capitol Building. By the time it reaches Las Tunas, it has covered about 700 kilometers.

This image, taken from the Provincial Museum (which served as the Municipal City Hall for a time), shows the section that was "cut" through the park to allow the new engineering work to pass through the center of what was then called Victoria de Las Tunas. In this way, vehicular access to the eastern part of the archipelago was created, and the city gained life and modernity.
