Almost everyone at some point in their life dreams to start their own family. We all were born from families that have taken care of us , stood by us and moulded us into who we are today. Without family, I really don’t know where some of us would be today. This shows how important family is in the life of every individual.

In as much as family is important to every human, starting your own family comes with a lot of responsibilities and for most people, their family size matters a lot while some don’t really care about it. Just take a walk down the streets of some major cities in Ghana and you’d come across so many kids below the age of 6 begging on highways which is very risky. Sometimes I sit and ask myself where the parents of these kids are. At that time I didn’t know their parents were even those that send them out to beg on the streets at that age until I saw it with my own eyes. You’d usually see the parents of these kids whether the mom or the dad sitting at one corner on the street while the kids are being used to gain money from others. Sometimes I get sad and other times I get so mad at these parents.

Because first off, why would you give birth to a child if you’re going to make the kid suffer? This kids are supposed to be in school learning with their mates instead of begging in the sun on highways. What if something should happen to the child, who’s going to be blamed then? I guess we’ll never know. Personally, I believe that before you even bring another life into this earth, you should at least be capable of taking care of them by providing their basic needs and more. Having a kid is no joke today. The world is harsh and not everyone would even pity you if you should be suffering with your family. This is where family size comes in.

I always say I value quality over quantity. I’d rather have one or two kids I can take care of well, have time for and groom properly than have 5 or 6 kids I can’t even provide with 3 square meals. But funny enough, people who can’t afford to take care of their kids are even those giving birth to dozens of kids. This is something I’ve been trying to wrap my head around for years now.

Currently, if the government should give incentives for having a small family size, I think it would be best on both the side of individuals and the country as a whole. The economy is hard and people are struggling a lot these days. The population is growing rampantly and there’s pressure on our social amenities on the daily basis. Everyone would hop on the idea of receiving incentives for having a not so big family but just the right family size to fit their income.

This initiative would be an advantage for both parties looking at the current state of our country. It would reduce the pressure on our amenities while also regulating the population size to some extent. In the long run, I believe this will help us set things right in our country with smaller family sizes as the pressure wouldn’t be much. Children wouldn’t be on the streets begging for money day and night but rather be in school studying. Parents would have time for their kids and also be able to have lives of their own.
A win for us all.
