Güeros is one of those films that simultaneously seems to be about nothing, but in reality, it's about everything.

Directed by Alonso Ruizpalacios, Güeros is a 2014 film that follows the story of two brothers and a friend, who embark on a journey to find their favorite musician: Epigmenio Cruz.

Presented as a coming-of-age movie set in late 1990s Mexico, we find a film that breaks the stigma of art-house cinema, somewhat ironic considering its protagonists are three poor young people and it's filmed in black and white (something the film itself seems to accept). But it turns out to be a much more raw and compelling representation of youthful rebellion than anything else I've seen this year.

More than a stinging social critique, Güeros is a portrait of the Mexican essence, captured from a perspective that anyone anywhere in the world could understand. It invites retrospection, and the pace that starts off annoying ends up working in its favor.

Starring Sebastián Aguirre, Leonardo Ortizgris, and Tenoch Huerta (yes, the one we met as Namor a couple of years later in Wakanda Forever), Güeros is full of beautiful moments; it's immersive, painful, but also extremely optimistic in its own way.

It's commendable that amidst the disaster, the struggle, and the violence, it continues to find spaces to show Mexico City as the beautiful place it is, with all its flaws and virtues.

A solid film that everyone should see. I fell in love with its dialogue, its characters, its moments of calm, and those plagued by chaos.

Give anything that doesn't seem appealing at first a chance; it could become your next favorite movie.
