I recently went to Alcochete. I had long wanted to get to know more about this Ribatejo town, located in the Setúbal district.

The journey of just over 50 kilometers takes us pleasantly over the Vasco da Gama Bridge, which gives us a glimpse of everything we're about to experience on the other bank of the River Tagus.

Its important salt pans, which were once of major importance to the local economy, are now only a small fraction of what they were decades ago. Located in the Tagus Natural Estuary, where a large percentage of waterfowl come to nest, this natural resource will surely require a future visit from me, so that I can observe all its splendor up close.

Arriving at the Zona Ribeirinha, I parked the car in one of the shaded areas located in a new urbanization that is expanding rapidly.

After a short walk to the riverside area, I was immediately struck by the charm of the region's typical buildings and architecture. The houses, some of which are covered in green tiles, are one of the region's ex-libris.

The narrow streets, flanked by low buildings with bright shutters and jambs, with white walls that contrast with the blue of the sky, are a pleasant invitation for the shade and cool breeze they provide, which on this afternoon felt so good.

It was a very hot afternoon, typical of the region, and even though we were heading towards the end of September, the temperature didn't drop below 32ºC!

I found myself getting lost in the intricate streets of the cheerful little town. I admired every detail I saw... The houses, the polished cobbled streets, which have been used by people for years and years.

In one of the central squares, close to the center, I ended up sitting down and resting. In this town, with a strong bullfighting influence, there are many references, and although I'm fundamentally against bullfighting, it's always good to understand the origins of local traditions, habits and customs.

Towards the end of the tour, I ended up stopping by one of the traditional bakeries in the center of the village and buying a milk queijada. Although I didn't know it, I was won over by its soft sweetness, without being too cloying.

I took advantage of the fantastic afternoon and ended up sitting in the garden next to the Mother Church, soaking up the coolness of a pleasant summer afternoon.

On the way back to the car, there was still time to photograph a few more facades of various buildings, leaving me with the desire to return one day with more time to admire and contemplate all the history that this town, whose name is probably of Arab origin (Al caxete = "The Oven"), has left me.

Recentemente fui até Alcochete. Há muito que tinha vontade de conhecer um pouco mais dessa vila Ribatejana, localizada no Distrito de Setúbal.

A viagem de pouco mais de 50 quilómetros, faz-se agradavelmente pela Ponte Vasco da Gama, que acaba por nos dar a envolvência de tudo o que iremos vivenciar na outra margem do Rio Tejo.

As suas importantes salinas, que outrora, foram de maior importância para a economia local, hoje apenas são uma pequena fracção do que há décadas foram. Localizadas no Estuário Natural do Tejo, onde uma grande percentagem das aves aquáticas procura para nidificar, este recurso Natural, seguramente requerer uma visita próxima futura minha, para poder observar bem de perto todo o seu esplendor.

Chegado à Zona Ribeirinha, estacionei o carro numa das sombras, localizadas numa urbanização nova, que se encontra em franca expansão.

Após um curto percurso a pé, até à parte mais ribeirinha, fui imediatamente brindado com o encanto da construção e arquitectura típicas da região. As casas, algumas delas revestidas por azulejos verdes, são um dos ex-libris da região.

As ruas, estreitas, ladeadas por edificações baixas, de portadas e ombreiras garridas, de paredes brancas que contrastam com azul do céu, são um convite agradável, pela sombra e brisa fresca que proporcionam, e que nesta tarde, tão bem soube.

Estava uma tarde bem quente, típico da região, e mesmo já caminhando para o fim de Setembro, as temperaturas não baixaram dos 32ºC!

Fiz por me perder por entre as ruas, intricadas, da pequena e alegre vila. Admirei todos os pormenores que via... As casas, as ruas de calçada polida, ao longo de anos e anos de pessoas que as usaram.

Numa das praças centrais, e já perto do Centro, acabei por me sentar e descansar. Nesta vila, com forte influência de tauromáquia, as referências são mais que muitas, e apesar de eu ser fundamentalmente contra as touradas, é sempre bom perceber as origens das tradições, hábitos e costumes locais.

Para o fim do passeio, acabei por passar numa das padarias tradicionais do centro da Vila, e comprar uma queijada de leite. Doce que apesar de não conhecer, conquistou-me pelo seu doce suave, sem ser demasiado enjoativo.

Aproveitei que estava uma tarde fantástica, e acabei por me sentar no jardim ao lado da Igreja Matriz, e fiquei a receber o fresco de uma agradável tarde de Verão.

No percurso de regresso ao carro, ficou ainda tempo para fotografar mais umas fachadas de vários edifícios, deixando aqui a vontade de um dia regressar com mais tempo para poder admirar e contemplar toda a história que esta vila com nome com provável origem Árabe (Al caxete = "O Forno"), me deixou.
