The kite-flying festival is known as "Shakrain" and in Bengali it's called "Ghuri Utshob." People in bangladesh celebrates it every year. So basically you buy kites and fly it on the terrace with all other neighbors and it's such a special event where people gathers together. On each rooftop you will see people with different kind of kites and flying them with joy. The sky is filled with colorful kites of different shapes.

The kite fight begins and If your kites string gets cut by someone else then people starts to cheers and have a good laughter moment, some people often run to catch the drifting kites on the street.

On this day delicious traditional foods are made in the households and they usually make Pitha and other winter foods. The neighborhood often shares their food and making it a time of bonding.

When it's the time of the evening, people starts the show of fireworks and flame. To be honest it find it very scary when people play with fire, I prefer to watch it from a distance. spinning flaming sticks are fun to watch. Then there's also seen some floating lanterns. Well, to me Shakrain is truly a mesmerizing tradition. I think it's very attracting to the visitors from the other countries and they often enjoy this event very much.

This tradition is celebrated to give farewell to winter and welcome the harvest new season. Shakrain will always remain as one of Dhaka’s most anticipated and cherished events.

This tradition takes place at the end of the Bengali month of Poush. Even if you don't see it being celebrated all around Bangladesh but in the parts of old Dhaka it is celebrated with big arrangements. This tradition has been going on from centuries and holds a historical significance in the lives of Dhaka residents.

Some people has suffered from injuries because of the strings of the kites and community leaders are taking care of the safety of the people. People are told to use the kites carefully and hopefully people will learn to maintain that and keep the festival neat and clean.

In the end I want to say, I love my culture and the tradition and Shakrain is one of my favourite tradition because it holds my childhood memories. I used to play with the kites when I was at village home and it's one of the memorable part of my life. The joy of flying kites can not be explained and unless you try it you won't understand the feelings of it.
