Castelldefels, a haven just a few minutes from Barcelona

Castelldefels is where Lionel Messi, the famous Argentine soccer star with international reach and an undisputed genius, lives. Castelldefels is a small town next to Barcelona. I'm not a big soccer fan, and when I first arrived, I found the place on the map; I didn't know it was where Lionel Messi lived.

What happened? I like Barcelona, but I'm not crazy about it. I find it too big for my taste: Barcelona is overwhelming. So, since I had to spend two days there—not as a stopover, but because I had to spend two days in one place—I said, “Where am I going?” I thought about Tarragona, but I didn't have a very good experience in Tarragona.

Castelldefels, un remanso a pocos minutos de Barcelona

Castelldefels, el lugar en donde vive nada más y nada menos que Lionel Messi, la famosa estrella del fútbol argentino y ya con un alcance internacional, un genio total e indiscutible. Castelldefels es una pequeña ciudad que está al lado de Barcelona. Yo no soy muy fanática del fútbol y, cuando apenas llegué, encontré el lugar en el mapa; no sabía que era donde vivía Lionel Messi.

¿Qué pasó? Que a mí Barcelona me gusta, pero no me vuelve loca. Me parece una ciudad demasiado grande para mi gusto: Barcelona es un montón. Entonces, como tenía que hacer unos dos días —no a modo de escala, sino porque debía pasar dos días en un lugar— dije: “¿Adónde me voy?”. Pensé en Tarragona, pero no tuve una muy buena experiencia en Tarragona.

I'm going to introduce you to this place that I haven't shared with the High Ten community yet. I had Sitges or Barcelona itself in mind, but while looking at the map, I found this new place because I didn't know it: Castelldefels.

I fell in love with this place. Later, when I arrived in Argentina, I started hearing, “Castelldefels, where Lionel Messi lives.” And I thought, “Really?” Actually, I don't think he's living there right now, but he has a house in Castelldefels.

Les voy a presentar este lugar que todavía no he compartido con la comunidad de High Ten. Tenía en mente Sitges o la misma Barcelona, pero, buscando en el mapa, encontré este nuevo lugar para mí porque no lo conocía: Castelldefels. Me enamoré de este lugar. Después, cuando llegué a Argentina, empecé a escuchar:

“Castelldefels, donde vive Lionel Messi”. Y pensé: “¿En serio?”. Efectivamente, en este momento creo que no está viviendo ahí, pero él tiene su casa en Castelldefels.

It is a small, extremely harmonious, and mainly residential city, although the residential and tourist areas coexist very well, as apartments, hotels, and several event hotels can be found throughout the clearly residential area. It also has a beautiful promenade, which invites both locals and tourists to visit this area. It is a safe, very quiet, and family-oriented area.

While Barcelona is cosmopolitan, Castelldefels seems to be a little more local, perhaps more European in nature, as there were many people from northern Europe, such as Germany, and also many Spaniards and Italians. Barcelona, on the other hand, has a much more international crowd and residents from all over the world. Anyone who has visited the city can more or less comment on this if they want, but if not, I'll tell you this: there is a much larger population than in Castelldefels, and it is a cosmopolitan population. That's the word, which I already mentioned.

Es una ciudad pequeña, sumamente armoniosa y principalmente residencial, aunque conviven muy bien lo residencial con lo turístico, ya que en toda la zona claramente residencial se pueden ver apartamentos, hoteles y también varios hoteles para eventos. Además, tiene un paseo marítimo precioso, lo cual invita tanto a los locales como a los turistas a visitar esta zona. Es un área segura, muy tranquila y orientada a las familias.

Mientras que Barcelona es cosmopolita, Castelldefels parece ser un poco más local, más pendiente quizás de lo europeo propiamente dicho, ya que había muchas personas del norte de Europa, como Alemania, y también muchos españoles e italianos. Barcelona, por su parte, tiene un público y unos residentes mucho más internacionales, de todas partes del mundo. Quien ha visitado la ciudad puede más o menos comentarlo si quiere, pero si no, les cuento esto: hay mucha más población que en Castelldefels, y es una población cosmopolita. Esa es la palabra, que ya la mencioné.

I loved Castelldefels. It was a sunny day. My hotel was a little far from the seafront promenade, about a 20-minute walk, but the area I walked through was very pretty. It was an events hotel called Hotel S.B. Barcelona Events. It was extremely quiet, with quite a few families staying there too. I thought it would be a little more focused on adults, but the truth is that it had a spectacular breakfast, the hotel staff was spectacular, and it was very well located, even though it wasn't on the beach or anything like that. It was a four-star hotel that I treated myself to for finishing the busy season in Ibiza, and I enjoyed it very much.

I was able to rest. I was very, very tired, to be honest, so between the hotel and the location: it was wonderful. When I headed into the city, I saw the beautiful Castelldefels sign next to a kind of cube that you have to climb up a ladder to reach, and from there you can see the sea. It's very beautiful too. This area is called Plaza de las Palmeras because it's a roundabout full of palm trees, and they were holding an event focused on education, which was really nice.

Castelldefels me encantó. Era un día soleado. Mi hotel quedaba un poquito lejos del paseo marítimo, más o menos a 20 minutos andando a pie, pero la zona por la que caminaba era muy bonita. Era un hotel de eventos y el nombre es Hotel S.B. Barcelona Events. Sumamente tranquilo, también con bastantes familias. Pensé que iba a estar un poco más enfocado en los adultos, pero la verdad es que tenía un desayuno espectacular, el personal del hotel era espectacular y estaba muy bien ubicado, a pesar de que no estaba frente al mar ni nada de eso. Era un hotel de cuatro estrellas que me regalé por haber terminado la pesada temporada en Ibiza, y lo disfruté muchísimo.

Pude descansar. Estaba muy, muy cansada, la verdad, así que entre el hotel y el lugar: una maravilla. Cuando me dirigí hacia la ciudad, vi el hermoso cartel de Castelldefels que está al lado de una especie de cubo al que tenés que subir por una escalera y, desde allí, se ve el mar. Es muy bonito también. Esta zona se llama Plaza de las Palmeras porque se trata de una rotonda repleta de palmeras, y justo estaban haciendo un evento enfocado a la educación, algo muy bonito la verdad.

From that point on, I started walking along the promenade and noticed that there were lots of ice cream shops and hamburger joints. There's a slightly more American vibe, or, as they said, not so European. They sell, I don't know, Frankfurt sausages and that kind of thing, and they were pretty good. I walked around all afternoon. I also realized that I had bought my plane ticket from Chile to Mendoza, so while I was walking, I also had to buy a bus ticket from Chile to Mendoza. But it was a very nice walk and also a shopping experience in a totally different environment.

A partir de ese punto, empecé a caminar por el paseo marítimo y me di cuenta de que había muchas heladerías, muchos negocios de hamburguesas. Hay una inclinación un poco más norteamericana o, como decían, no tan europea. Venden, no sé, salchichas Fráncfort y ese tipo de cosas, y estaban bastante buenas. Estuve caminando toda la tarde. Me di cuenta, además, de que había sacado mi pasaje en avión de Chile a Mendoza, así que mientras caminaba también tuve que comprar un pasaje en colectivo, en bus, de Chile a Mendoza. Pero fue un paseo muy bonito y también una compra en un entorno totalmente diferente.

If you have the chance to stop in Castelldefels, I recommend it because, in my opinion, it's a place worth visiting. Barcelona offers one side of Spain, but Spain also has little places that don't appear so much on the map, and Castelldefels gives you that feeling: that of a little hidden treasure that is worth discovering.

Lo que ofrece Barcelona es una parte de España, pero España también tiene lugarcitos que de pronto no aparecen tanto en el mapa, y Castelldefels da justamente esa sensación: la de un pequeño tesoro escondido que vale la pena descubrir.
