Sarah McFadden's "Housemaid"

Okay, so at this point, I feel like if a friend don’t drag me by the ears, I wouldn’t be able to pick up a book to read. A colleague and friend of mine practically had to check in with me every thirty minutes to be sure I was reading this book she'd recommended, and when I eventually did, I was super glad for it. I’d been hearing of this book a lot of times, so it was about time, anyway.
Housemaid by Freida McFadden

It’s been ten years since she was incarcerated, and now Millie is out from prison, and is apparently out of a job, living and sleeping in her car. She finally has a chance at financial freedom when Nina hires her to be a maid in her magnificent house. Nina strikes Millie as weird, and the tiny room in the attic is creepy, but she stifles the jeebies she’s getting from the house, and accepts the job due to her desperation.
She resumes work, and it's immediately clear that her new boss is a nutcase, same as her daughter, and her poor husband, Andrew, has to deal with her mental issues. She figures out soon that she rather underestimated just how dark of a situation she's now in, especially with Nina, but unbeknownst to her, she may just be figuring out too late, especially when she realizes that she is in love with Andrew.
My Thoughts and Rating
I think I’ve just about had enough with these thriller ladies, who let their lust get the better of them, enough that they put every other thing else in jeopardy. I wasn’t that drawn to Millie, and didn’t find her relatable, for rather obvious reasons.

Like the typical Westerner, she seems to be bent on taking a job, even though everything about it screams that she runs. Her lack of discretion, and proper decision making skills is sad. But, I guess, even I may have misjudged her a bit. Maybe.
This is, however, the ideal thriller. A plot that keeps you hooked from start to finish, and twists that ensure your mouth stays open from beginning to end. You’re at the edge of your seat, and if you’re a scaredy cat like me, your heart will skip a beat multiple times. I almost gave up reading the book, because I just couldn’t take it, but my friend’s scowling face kept appearing in my mind’s eye, and so I trudged on.
I did not expect the ending. I hardly think anyone would have expected it, as well. When I was done with the book, which ended in such a way that you can just tell there’s a sequel, I kept wondering what I’d just read. No regrets, though, but there was something quite off about it.
The pacing was nice. Starts with a bang, and sustains it till the end. This is the first book of Sarah’s I’m reading, and she did not disappoint. I just love when I get introduced into an author, and after reading their work, I want to read more. Sarah is HER, and yeah, there’s a second part to this book, so I think I’ll go read that as well. Loved this to no ends. A good 8.8/10 by all counts.
