No Pork On My Fork, Strictly Fish On My Dish

Disclaimer: I like to share my experiences in the real world here on chain. While this topic could be a hot button topic for some, I just love to talk about the bible with people. You don't have to agree with me, that's fine, but let's discuss :)

I had an interesting back and forth with a fellow believer on social media this week....

I'm not sure if it got 'heated' or if the other person got mad at me per se. I was just interacting for the sake of biblical studies and talking scripture. I'll give you the context and then we can dive into it.

There's some school in Canada that is banning pork from their school cafeteria or what not. The story captured my attention and I opened up the comments. In it, the person I dialogued with said in a nutshell...

"If they don't like our Christian values, they can go back to their own country!"

Not the greatest way to come across as 'Christian' was my first thought but then I opened up a can of worms. I responded with, why would any Christian eat pork anyways, it's unclean.

Yup, there's the can of worms and I opened it up :)

They got pretty upset with me and flung the standard 'we can eat everything because Jesus made everything clean' argument. O.K., but what does the bible say? I'll use the famous 2, which people that love them some bacon usually fling around and let's see what the bible actually says:

Mark 7:18-19 is the first one we'll look into:

Well, there you have it. Nothing is unclean right? We can eat it all....

This is usually one of the first claims people will throw at you when you say...Hey we shouldn't be eating pork because God said it was unclean.

The issue is, people like to cherry pick bible verses to fit their narrative. Let's go to verse 2 of this same chapter and see what the context is, in which Christ is telling people what is clean and unclean...

Ahhh...The context. This was never about making pork a clean animal and that we should be stuffing our face with swine. It was about the washing of hands. Ancient Israel was SUPER sketched out with washing of hands and that is what Christ is referring to. God said in Leviticus, pork is unclean. If Christ is saying it's clean, then He's making God a liar and welp....

You have to wrestle with that on your own. I'll believe God!

The next one is...Good ol' Peter in Acts 10...

I love this verse because it proves that Jesus' closest followers, never touched or ate pork. Even after His death....Which destroys that whole 'nailed to the cross' argument people like to bring up. Anywho....Let's again, let the bible explain itself.

Scroll down to verse 28...

You know what is so great about the bible? It's it's own best interpreter. Here we see Peter understanding what God showed him in the vision from verse 13. It was never about meat. It was always about fellow human beings.

And there is plenty more...I mean, at the end of the day I do believe God is the creator of the human body. And He knows what is best for us. And when He says, don't eat it, I tend to stick with what He says. And while I don't think this is a salvational issue when push comes to shove, you do see a pattern in Scripture...

Man fell because of....Appetite. Adam and Eve HAD to eat what God told them not to.

The 3 Hebrew boys in the first chapter of Daniel, were tested on diet. And when they stuck with vegetables and water, they became healthier than any one in the king's court.

I'm just throwing it out there to be discussed....Maybe God always knows best?
