Third Time Through the Ashes: Our Return to Pompeii

This summer marked our third time visiting the ancient ruins of Pompeii—and once again, it did not disappoint. Every visit seems to reveal more of the city, with newly excavated sections open to the public, expanding the experience and making each return feel fresh and even more immersive. Despite the growing length of the tour (and my increasingly tired feet by the end of it), I found myself just as captivated as the first time.

What continues to impress me is how the stories evolve as archaeologists uncover new details. Our guide did a fantastic job weaving in the latest discoveries and historical interpretations. It’s incredible how, centuries later, we’re still learning about what life was like in this bustling Roman city before it was frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

The eruption story itself remains one of the most powerful reminders of nature’s force. The idea that people saw signs—earthquakes, strange weather patterns—and yet stayed, dismissing the danger, feels eerily familiar. It’s a timeless lesson in human nature. Coincidentally, our visit came just days after Mount Etna erupted in Sicily, sending dramatic plumes of ash into the sky and forcing hikers to flee. It served as a stark reminder that while we’ve built much since those ancient days, we are still at the mercy of the natural world.

Pompeii reminds us that history isn’t just written in books—it’s buried beneath our feet, waiting to be uncovered and retold. The ruins, the mosaics, the human remains… they all speak across time. Despite the centuries and even millennia in between, we’re still piecing together what happened—and perhaps learning a bit more about ourselves in the process.
