I know I’m always saying that the day I’m talking about was the most special day of the trip, but I’m starting to realise that every single one of them truly was, because each day had something different that made this journey so wonderful. Today I’m going to talk about when we arrived in Sigiriya, to the famous Lion Rock. But before that, I have to mention the small mountain right in front of it, the one we climbed first, because people had recommended doing that hike beforehand. From there, the view of Sigiriya was stunning, and honestly, it was completely worth it.

Ya sé que siempre estoy diciendo que el día del que hablo ha sido el más especial del viaje, pero me estoy dando cuenta de que realmente todos lo fueron, porque cada uno tuvo algo diferente que hizo que este viaje fuera tan maravilloso. Hoy voy a hablar de cuando llegamos a Sigiriya, a Lion Rock. Pero antes tengo que contar la pequeña montaña que había enfrente y a la que subimos primero, porque nos habían recomendado hacer esa excursión antes. Desde allí había unas vistas preciosas de Sigiriya, y realmente mereció la pena.

The path to the top of this mountain, called Pidurangala Rock, was much easier than the one we would take later to reach the top of Sigiriya. In fact, there was almost no one there and we were completely alone, because everyone goes straight to Sigiriya. And yes, climbing it is amazing, but the best views of Sigiriya are actually from Pidurangala, because from there the panoramic views of the whole rock are spectacular. On the way up, we passed a reclining Buddha statue made of exposed brick, built directly into the rock, which made the hike feel even more special. Halfway up we also came across a huge boulder, and I took a picture pretending to hold it up. It looked like it could start rolling at any moment.

El camino hacia la cima de esta montaña, llamada Roca Pidurangala, fue muchísimo más fácil que el que haríamos después hasta la cima de Sigiriya. De hecho, no había casi nadie y estábamos completamente solos, porque todo el mundo va directamente a Sigiriya. Y sí, es una pasada subirla, pero realmente las mejores vistas de Sigiriya se tienen desde Pidurangala, porque desde allí las vistas panorámicas de toda la roca son espectaculares. Durante la subida pasamos por una estatua de un Buda reclinado hecha en ladrillo caravista, encajada dentro de la roca, que le daba un toque todavía más especial al camino. En mitad del trayecto también nos encontramos con una roca enorme con la que me hice una foto, haciendo como que la sujetaba. Parecía que en cualquier momento iba a empezar a rodar.

Once we were fully satisfied and completely overwhelmed by those breathtaking panoramic views, we began our descent from this little mountain to finally conquer the famous Sigiriya, the Lion Rock. As we got closer, we could see how that massive rock kept growing larger and larger before our eyes, but we didn’t miss the beauty around us: the small lakes, the well-kept pathways, the lush green vegetation, the water plants… The walk toward the base of Sigiriya Rock was truly beautiful.

Cuando ya estuvimos satisfechos y empapados de aquellas vistas panorámicas tan preciosas e impresionantes que te dejaban sin aliento, decidimos iniciar el camino de bajada de esta montañita para ir a conquistar la famosa Sigiriya, la Roca del León. A medida que nos acercábamos, veíamos cómo aquella imponente roca aumentaba de tamaño sin parar, pero, por supuesto, sin perder de vista la belleza de los laguitos que había a nuestro alrededor, los senderos tan bien cuidados, la vegetación tan verde, las plantas acuáticas… El camino hacia la base de la Roca de Sigiriya fue realmente precioso.

And this is where our great adventure of climbing to the top of Sigiriya Rock begins.

Y aquí es donde empieza nuestra gran aventura de escalada a la cima de la roca de Sigiriya.

From the bottom, we could already see what was waiting for us. A huge maze of zigzag staircases, spiral stairs, walkways, and narrow paths. To be honest, there were moments when it was quite overwhelming, not because the stairs felt unsafe, but because of the height and how narrow they were in some sections. But nothing beats a little adrenaline when you travel, it’s what makes everything more exciting. There were so many people going up and down, and many locals stood still watching to make sure nothing happened to any tourist. Up, up, up… it felt like we were never going to reach the top, but eventually, everything comes.

Desde abajo podíamos ver lo que nos esperaba. Un laberinto larguísimo de escaleras en zigzag, escaleras de caracol, pasarelas y caminos. La verdad es que en muchos momentos impresionaba bastante, no porque parecieran inseguras, sino por la altitud y lo estrechas que eran en ciertos tramos. Pero no hay nada como un poco de adrenalina cuando viajas, es lo que hace que todo sea más interesante. Había muchísima gente subiendo y bajando, y muchos locales estaban parados observando que no le ocurriera nada a ningún turista. Subía, subía, subía… parecía que nunca íbamos a llegar arriba, pero al final todo llega.

I don’t think I need to say much to explain how beautiful the views were once we finally reached the top. You can see it yourselves in the photos. They probably never do reality justice, but you can imagine it. First of all, the view towards the small mountain we had climbed earlier, Pidurangala Rock. I zoomed in as much as I could with my camera to capture that rock where I took the funny picture, pretending to hold it up because it looked like it was about to fall. As you can see, the top of that mountain was completely different from the one we were standing on now in Sigiriya. Up here, there were remains of the original construction, with defined areas and even a small architectural water pool. You could also clearly see the beautiful pathways around the entrance that we had walked through to reach the base. And there was this interesting structure, which I believe was used as a mechanism to lift bricks and construction materials up to the summit and maintain this impressive space at the top of Sigiriya.

Creo que no hace falta decir mucho para justificar lo bonitas que fueron las vistas al llegar arriba. Podéis verlo vosotros mismos en las fotos. Seguramente nunca hacen justicia a la realidad, pero os lo podéis imaginar. Lo primero de todo, la vista hacia la pequeña montaña que habíamos subido antes, la Roca Pidurangala. Hice zoom todo lo que pude con mi cámara para captar aquella roca en la que me hice la foto tan graciosa, haciendo como que la sujetaba porque parecía que se iba a caer. Como podéis ver, la cima de esa montaña era completamente distinta a la cima en la que estábamos ahora en Sigiriya. Aquí arriba había restos de la construcción original, con zonas delimitadas e incluso un pequeño estanque arquitectónico rectangular. También se veían perfectamente los caminos tan bonitos que rodean la entrada y por los que habíamos caminado para llegar a la base. Y estaba esta estructura curiosa que creo que se utilizaba como un mecanismo para subir ladrillos y materiales de construcción hasta la cima y mantener todo este espacio tan impresionante en lo alto de Sigiriya.

The way down was quite scary, as it usually is. When you’re going up, you’re focused on the steps, but on the way down you have all the views right in front of you, so it always feels more overwhelming and gives you more vertigo. I don’t have extreme vertigo, but I do have a bit, and heights impress me quite a lot. On top of that, the wind was extremely strong. If you didn’t hold on properly, it could push you to the ground with a single gust. Our descent was very interesting because on one of the terraces we came across a group of schoolchildren doing an activity. What an amazing day to spend with your classmates doing a school outing in such a privileged and beautiful place. We also found some remains of architectural structures, like steps and rock excavations, which were really interesting. Eventually we reached the bottom, where our tuk-tuk was waiting for us and we began our ride back to the place where we were staying that night.

El camino de bajada dio bastante miedo, como suele pasar. En la subida estás concentrado en los escalones, pero en la bajada tienes todas las vistas delante de ti, y por eso siempre impresiona más y da más vértigo. Yo no tengo un vértigo extremo, pero sí que tengo algo, y las alturas me impresionan bastante. Además, hacía un viento tremendo. Si no te agarrabas bien, te tiraba al suelo de un soplido. Nuestra bajada fue muy interesante, porque en una de las esplanadas nos encontramos con un grupo de niños de un colegio que estaban haciendo una actividad escolar. Qué maravilla de día para pasarlo con tus amigos de clase en un lugar tan privilegiado y tan bonito. También nos encontramos con algunos restos de construcciones arquitectónicas, como escaleras y excavaciones en la roca, muy interesantes. Hasta que por fin llegamos abajo, donde nos esperaba nuestro tuk-tuk y nuestro camino de vuelta al lugar donde nos quedábamos esa noche.
