TacoCat's TrEats #118: Yummy Crispy Beancurd with Beehoon! 馃構

Hey Hive!
Now that a lot of people here have already gotten vaccinated, I'm very happy to hear that Singapore is now allowing in-house dining again, but up to 2 people and obviously you have to be vaccinated. However, we're still trying to stay safe and limiting our time out. Besides, work and my messed up sleep schedule due to streaming has been keeping us pretty busy so we've been doing more takeouts nowadays.
The other day we decided to try out a different hawker center in our neighbourhood. And instead of delivery we went out to take a walk there so we could decide what to try in-person. I also needed a walk to get out of the house for a bit.
So this was the hawker center we went to! It wasn't very big but it did have a variety of different stalls specialising in their unique dishes.

So there were noodle dishes, Malay cuisine, the drinks stall and of course a Chinese tzi char place which sells affordable "homemade style" dishes.

Ultimately we decided to try this stall which sells Nasi Lemak and also satay, otah and Ngoh Hiang!

Ngoh hiang is a unique Hokkien and Teochew dish widely adopted in Southeast Asia in addition to its place of origin in southern China.
Technically, ngoh hiang refers to a deep fried beancurd skin roll consisting of minced pork and prawn (or fish) seasoned with five-spice powder. But it's also expanded to include other meats and vegetables like lup cheong, cucumber, century egg, deep-fried beancurd, fishball and many others. It is usually served with chili sauce and a house-special sweet sauce. And here in Singapore, many stalls sell fried bee hoon with ngoh hiang (adapted from Wikipedia).

Souce:
It's been a while since we've had ngoh hiang and since this was near our place we were quite excited to see how good it was!

So first thing we do at a ngoh hiang stall is to choose our dishes! The stall will have a selection of raw/semi-cooked items you can choose from and then it'll be deep fried on the spot so you'll get it nice and fresh!

We also ordered two packets of bee hoon to go along with it and you could see the stall owner frying the food we chose in the back!

We were really excited to try it so we hurried back home and opened the packets up and here it was!

We chose a variety of beancurd (tau kwa), rolls, crispy prawn sheets, cucumbers and meat rolls! And of course it came with our individual packets of fried bee hoon!

And it was absolutely delicious! One of the rolls we chose was a little funky though, not that it was bad but the filling was just not my cup of tea. I'm not sure what kind of ngoh hiang it was but it wasn't what I expected it to be.

The other items we chose were yummy though! Crispy and fried to perfection! The bee hoon was subtle enough to still provide some flavour to match the crispy savouriness and was not plain at all. The chili sauce (that I actually forgot to take a picture of) was good too! It was a sweet chili sauce as expected but it matched the fried stuff really well! One of our favourites is definitely the crispy prawn beancurd sheet and dipped in the sweet chili sauce it was pure perfection!
Overall it was a really delicious meal! And while it's not the healthiest it's still healthier than fast food I would say, so still a win! We'll definitely be going back there again and trying out the other food items for sure!
Thanks so much for reading!
