Strawberries and Knees

After being taken to the cleaners playing poker for the first time last night, today I needed to find a way to save some money to cover my liens, before they send around the heavies to break my kneecaps. So, we went straight to the strawberry fields to pick all we could. And to eat all we could.
Who knows when we can afford to eat again!

We took two trays and spent an hour picking along the lines until they were full. And I probably ate about half a kilo along the way also. Because that is how it is done. Even @galenkp got some, though his eating was proxied through Smallsteps, so not quite as enjoyable for him.
1 hour picking = 12.6 kilos @ 8€/kg = 100€
If we were to buy from the market sellers, it would be around 150€ worth, and if we went to the supermarkets, it would be around 200€ worth. But more than the money saved by doing the picking ourselves, was the time spent picking, eating, and talking about picking and eating strawberries.

This is one of my favourite days of the summer, though last time the season was disrupted and we missed the strawberry window. However, another one of my favourite days will be coming in a month or so, once the raspberries are in season and we will do it all again. Raspberries are far easier to pick because they grow higher off the ground. They are also easier to eat, because their height is closer to mouth level.
Uncle @galenkp might remember this playground tractor from his last visit to Finland - though Smallsteps is quite a big bigger than she was then. Though, still not that big as she takes after her parents' height.
There is a café there and while it is only around 20°C, after an hour in the sun I was pretty worn out and a cool, locally made drink was definitely on the cards.
While we saved more than I lost last night, spending money to make money doesn't really work when what you are buying is going to be consumed. But the investment into having bloody sweet strawberries for a few days fresh, and then for through the winter is worth the cost - and the investment into spending some time together collecting, is definitely a high return. Now though, I better transfer that money over to the winners before they send their boys around to collect more than strawberries.
Oh. And fire up the grill!
