Old vs new: which silver era do you stack?

With this year’s #secretsilversanta now officially underway, it’s the perfect time to dig a little deeper in to what makes each of our stacks unique... ive already chatted about bars vs rounds, and even the different types of series that tug at our collecting hearts, but tonight’s question is one that might really split the community…
Do you prefer collecting older silver coins, or do new releases get your attention first??

Take the 1oz Silver Britannia, for example. A firm favourite among UK stackers, but one that has seen its fair share of change over the years. Once upon a time, the Britannia design changed annually, giving collectors something new to look forward to every year. Those early issues were bursting with variety and creativity — each design a small work of art in its own right. But now, we’re faced with the same reverse design year after year. For some, it’s a sign of consistency and recognition; for others, a bit of the magic has gone.
And then there’s the Mexican Libertad — a coin whose older versions have become incredibly sought after, carrying hefty premiums in the secondary market. The same can be said for Chinese Silver Pandas, where earlier designs are now collector favourites commanding serious prices. Compare those to their modern counterparts, and it’s easy to see how a coin’s age, design, and history can all influence its desirability.

Investing in new releases can often feel like a bit of a roulette. Will this year’s coin become a future gem that collectors fight over? Or will it simply hover at face value, forgotten in the years to come? That’s part of the fun, and the risk of stacking for both passion and profit.
So... As you think about what kind of silver your #secretsanta might enjoy unwrapping this Christmas, it’s worth asking yourself: does your heart lean toward the classics with history behind them, or do you prefer the excitement of brand-new releases hot off the press?
