The theme of this week's Olio di Balena contest couldn't have been more fitting. **Today, November 14th, marks the anniversary of Claude Monet's birth** in Paris on November 14, 1840. Claude Monet is undoubtedly one of my favorite painters and the founding father of a movement that would forever revolutionize the way we represent reality: **Impressionism**. Even today, we can still appreciate many contemporary artists inspired by his school of thought. Monet is the artist who freed the brush and palette from the prison of the painter's closed studio. **Driven by the desire to capture the fleeting "impression" of a moment**, he took his art “en plein air”, or outdoors. His entire career was an obsessive and joyful pursuit of **light** in all its manifestations. His two most famous works are undoubtedly: - "*Impression, rising sun*", which gives its name to the movement itself; - "*Water Lilies*", a series of canvases depicting a wonderful garden with a Japanese bridge, weeping willows, and a lily pond.

Claude Monet è senza dubbio uno dei miei pittori preferiti ed è il padre fondatore di un movimento che avrebbe rivoluzionato per sempre il modo di rappresentare la realtà: l’**impressionismo**. Ancora oggi possiamo apprezzare molti artisti contemporanei che si ispirano alla sua corrente di pensiero. Monet è l'artista che ha liberato il pennello e la tavolozza dalla prigione dello studio chiuso del pittore. **Guidato dal desiderio di catturare l'”impressione” fugace di un istante**, portò la sua arte “en plein air”, cioè all'aperto. La sua intera carriera fu una ricerca ossessiva e gioiosa della **luce** in tutte le sue manifestazioni. Le sue opere più famose sono sicuramente due: - *“Impressione, sole nascente”*, che dà il nome al movimento stesso; - *“Ninfee”*, un ciclo di tele che rappresentano un meraviglioso giardino con un ponte giapponese, i salici piangenti e lo stagno di ninfee.

The contest asks for three artists, but it's not an easy choice because I love art, so I decided to choose one from the 1900s and one from the 2000s. My second protagonist in today's series is **Alfons Mucha**, who lived between 1860 and 1939. He is the founder of the **Art Nouveau** movement in Paris. His art is a hymn to grace, centered on the **female figure**: ethereal women with flowing hair, often framed by decorative halos and complex floral motifs reminiscent of **Byzantine and Celtic art**. His meeting with actress **Sarah Bernhardt** launched his career, transforming theater posters into works of applied art accessible to all. Works such as the poster for *"Gismonda"* (1894), a monumental and revolutionary poster, or the series of *"The Four Seasons"* (1896), in which the female figure lyrically merges with nature, demonstrate how Mucha transformed lithography into poetry, decorating everyday life with a sinuous and dreamlike luxury, embodying the **dreamy beauty of the Belle Époque**.

Il contest chiede di parlare di tre artisti, ma non è una scelta facile perché io adoro l’arte, per cui ho pensato di sceglierne uno del 1900 e uno degli anni 2000. Il mio secondo protagonista della serie di oggi è **Alfons Mucha**, vissuto tra il 1860 e il 1939. Si tratta del fondatore del movimento **Art Nouveau** di Parigi. La sua arte è un inno alla grazia, centrato sulla **figura femminile**: donne eteree, dai capelli fluenti, spesso incorniciate da aureole decorative e motivi floreali complessi che richiamano l'**arte bizantina e celtica**. Fu l'incontro con l'attrice **Sarah Bernhardt** a lanciarlo, trasformando i manifesti teatrali in opere d'arte applicata accessibili a tutti. Opere come la locandina per *“Gismonda”* (1894), un manifesto monumentale e rivoluzionario, o la serie delle *“Le Quattro Stagioni”* (1896), in cui la figura femminile si fonde liricamente con la natura, dimostrano come Mucha abbia trasformato la litografia in poesia, decorando la quotidianità con un lusso sinuoso e onirico, incarnando la **bellezza sognante della Belle Époque**.

My third and final artist today is much less well-known than the previous two. In fact, **I'm sure no one here on Hive knows him**! (I'd be happy to be proven wrong in the comments.) This is **Alex Grey**, born in 1953 and still active. In his works, he transcends traditional painting to explore the deeper dimensions of **human consciousness and spirituality**. Unlike the painters I mentioned earlier, Grey is a little darker, immersing himself in inner light, revealing the **anatomical, energetic, and spiritual layers of the body and mind**. His works, often monumental and rich in **meticulous detail**, such as *"Vision Crystal"* or the *"Sacred Mirrors"* series, blend science and mysticism, anatomy and sacred symbolism. His subjects, with their illuminated chakras and iridescent auric fields, become windows onto an inner universe where the human connects with the divine, inviting the viewer to a profound **contemplation of existence** and the interconnectedness of all things.

Il mio terzo e ultimo artista di oggi è molto meno conosciuto dei due precedenti. Anzi, **sono sicura che nessuno qui su Hive lo conosce!** (sarei felice di essere smentita nei commenti). Si tratta di **Alex Grey**, nato nel 1953 e tutt’ora in attività. Nelle sue opere trascende la pittura tradizionale per esplorare le dimensioni più profonde della **coscienza umana e la spiritualità**. A differenza dei pittori di cui ho parlato prima, Grey è un po’ più “oscuro”, si immerge nella luce interiore, rivelando **strati anatomici, energetici e spirituali del corpo e della mente**. Le sue opere, spesso monumentali e ricche di **dettagli meticolosi**, come *“Vision Crystal”* o la serie *“Sacred Mirrors”*, fondono scienza e misticismo, anatomia e simbologia sacra. I suoi soggetti, con i loro chakras illuminati e i loro campi aurici iridescenti, diventano finestre su un universo interiore dove l'umano si connette al divino, invitando lo spettatore a una profonda **contemplazione dell'esistenza** e dell'interconnessione di tutto.
