I have driven through Bratislava several times and been there on business several times. But I hadn't been there "just" to explore the city, or rather its historical center. In fact, all I knew of Bratislava was the highway and the business center, so I wondered: would it be worth it? What is there in Bratislava? You may have noticed the "Slovakia Surprises" advertising campaign to attract tourists to Slovakia. And I was positively surprised by Bratislava. I only spent one day in Bratislava, so don't expect anything extensive. In fact, the only thing I managed to do was take a longer walk through the historical center. But even that convinced me that Bratislava is a charming city and worth a visit. This time I came to Bratislava by train. In my case, it is the fastest and most comfortable way to get to Bratislava. From the train station, the shortest way to the center is along Stefanik Street, past the Grasalkovich Palace, the seat of the President of the Slovak Republic.

Bratislavou jsem několikrát projížděl a několikrát jsem tam byl pracovně. Ale ještě jsem tam nebyl "jen tak", abych si prošel město, respektive jeho historické centrum. Vlastně jsem z Bratislavy znal jen průtah dálnicí a business centrum, takže jsem si říkal: bude to vůbec stát za to? Co je vlastně v Bratislavě? Možná jste zaregistrovali reklamní kampaň "Slovensko prekvapí", která má přilákat na Slovensko turisty. A mně se podařilo, že mě Bratislava pozitivně překvapila. V Bratislavě jsem strávil pouhý jeden den, takže nečekejte nic rozsáhlého. Vlastně jsem stihnul jen takovou větší procházku historickým centrem. Ale i ta mě přesvědčila, že Bratislava je okouzlující město a její návštěva má smysl. Do Bratislavy jsem tentokrát přijel vlakem. V mém případě je to nejrychlejší a nejpohodlnější způsob, jak se do Bratislavy dostat. Od nádraží je nejkratší cesta do centra Štefánikovou ulicí kolem Grasalkovičova paláce, sídla prezidenta Slovenské republiky.

I took Obchodná Street to Hurbanovo Square, and from there it is only a few steps to Michalska Gate, a symbolic entrance to Bratislava's Old Town. From a distance, the Michalská Gate Tower, which used to be part of the city's fortifications, resembles a church steeple. On its top is a gilded statue of Archangel Michael fighting the devil in the form of a dragon.

Ulicí Obchodná jsem se dostal na Hurbanovo náměstí a odtud je už jen pár kroků k Michalské bráně, která je symbolickým vstupem do bratislavského starého města. To, co z dálky připomíná kostelní věž, je právě věž Michalské brány, která byla dříve součástí městského opevnění. Na její špici je pozlacená socha archanděla Michaela bojujícího s ďáblem v podobě draka.

You walk through the gate and find yourself in another world. You are not in a relatively modern city, but in Bratislava at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Winding streets, mysterious corners, countless cafes and pastry shops, comfort, cake, whipped cream. I was there early in the morning, when most of the shops were just coming to life. (Actually, what's early morning? Before 11 a.m. on a Saturday...?) But even so, the first visitors were trickling into the café gardens.

Projdete bránou, a ocitnete se v úplně jiném světě. Kolem vás není relativně moderní město, ale Bratislava z přelomu 19. a 20. století. Křivolaké uličky, tajemná zákoutí, nesčetné množství kaváren a cukráren, pohoda, dortík, šlehačka. Byl jsem tam brzy ráno, kdy většina podniků teprve ožívala. (Vlastně co je to brzy ráno? V sobotu před jedenáctou...?) Ale i tak se do kavárenských zahrádek začínali trousit první návštěvníci.

I didn't have a specific destination, so my steps led me to Hlavné námestie, the center of Bratislava's Old Town. On one side, the Old Town Hall with its tower, on the other, the imposing building of the former Hungarian Discount and Exchange Bank.

Neměl jsem nějaký konkrétní cíl, takže mě moje kroky zanesly na Hlavné námestie, centrum bratislavského Starého mesta. Na jedné straně stará radnice s věží, na druhé straně impozantní budova bývalé Uherské eskontní a směnárenské banky.

Passing through the Old Town Hall, I reached Primaciálne Square and the Primatial Palace - the former seat of the Archbishop of Estergom, now a museum.

Průchodem skrz Starou radnici jsem došel na Primaciálne námestie k Primaciálnímu paláci - dříve sídlo ostřihomského arcibiskupa, nyní muzeum.

From the Main Square I walk through the Fisherman's Gate to the Danube, but on the way I had to stop at the most photographed statue in Bratislava - the iconic "Čumil" (how to translate it? Looker, peeper?).

Z Hlavního náměstí jdu Rybárskou bránou k Dunaji, ale cestou jsem se musel zastavit u nejfotografovanější sochy v Bratislavě - u ikonického "Čumila".

Around the Slovak National Theater I finally reach the Danube. I take pictures of the huge restaurant and cruise ships and of course of the SNP bridge, one of the famous symbols of the city.

Kolem Slovenského národního divadla se konečně dostávám k Dunaji. Fotím si obří restaurační a výletní lodě a samozřejmě i most SNP, který je jedním ze známých symbolů města.

It's time to walk back slowly. Even though I'm going back more or less the same way, I'm still finding new alleys, new views, new and new places that I hadn't noticed before.

Je čas se pomalu vrátit. I když jdu zpátky přibližně stejnou cestou, i tak nacházím nové uličky, nové pohledy, nová a nová místa, kterých jsem si dříve nevšimnul.

A travel article by a Czech author has to mention beer, otherwise it is impossible. I passed several breweries on my way: for example, the Bratislava Civic Brewery from 1758 or the Bradáč Brewery. And the Ventúrska klubovňa served tasting kits, as you can see in the photo. However, I practically don't drink beer myself, so don't expect me to write a paragraph evaluating the aroma and various shades of bitterness of this drink.

Cestovatelský článek od českého autora se musí zmínit i o pivu, to jinak nejde. Cestou jsem šel kolem několika pivovarů: například Bratislavský měšťanský pivovar z roku 1758 nebo třeba pivovar Bradáč. A v podniku Ventúrska klubovňa podávali degustační sady, jak je vidět i na fotce. Nicméně, já sám pivo prakticky nepiju, takže odstavec hodnotící vůni a různé odstíny hořkosti tohoto nápoje ode mě nelze čekat.

However, when I was studying in Slovakia about forty years ago, my classmates at the time described Šariš beer as something between a detergent and an emetic. I don't know if anything has changed since then, but Šariš was also available here in the capital.

Nicméně když jsem na Slovensku před nějakými čtyřiceti lety studoval, moji spolužáci hodnotili tehdejší pivo Šariš jako něco mezi čistícím prostředkem a emetikem. Nevím, jestli se od té doby něco změnilo, ale Šariš byl k dostání i zde v hlavním městě. (btw propagovat Šariš na tabuli od Kozla... takhle nějak vznikají mezinárodní konflikty 😂)

This photo with the trilingual name of the theater reminded me of what a colleague told me. He had a great-grandmother who lived in Bratislava all her life and spoke fluent Slovak, German, Hungarian and Yiddish. She didn't learn it, it was just the way they spoke in Bratislava a hundred years ago. Bratislava is a place where the Slovak world from the north, the Austrian world from the west, the Hungarian world from the south and the Jewish world... from everywhere. And something remains to this day. Waiting for the train that evening, I saw a family at the station. The parents spoke to their daughter in Slovak, the grandmother in German, and everyone seemed to understand each other without any problems.

Tahle fotka s trojjazyčným názvem divadla mi připomněla, co mi říkal jeden kolega. Měl prababičku, která žila celý život v Bratislavě, a mluvila plynně slovensky, německy, maďarsky a jidiš. Neučila se to, prostě takhle se v prvorepublikové Bratislavě mluvilo. Bratislava je místo, kde se spojuje slovenský svět od severu, rakouský od západu, maďarský z jihu a židovský... odevšad. A něco zůstalo i do dneška. Když jsem pak večer čekal na vlak, na nádraží jsem viděl rodinu. Rodiče mluvili na dcerku slovensky, babička německy, a všichni si očividně bez problémů rozuměli.

As the late afternoon slowly turned into evening, I walked back through Michael's Gate in the opposite direction, back into the city of the 21st century. Soon my train will leave for home and I think to myself, *"Bratislava, see you soon."*

Pozdní odpoledne se pomalu mění na večer, já jsem prošel znovu Michalskou bránou v opačném směru a dostal se zpět do města 21. století. Za chvíli mi jede vlak domů a já si říkám: *Bratislavo, někdy brzy zase na shledanou.*
