Smashed Magic

“For my last trick I'll need someone with a watch,” Steeleek shouted enthusiastically to the smiling audience. Many raised their hands, but finally the young magician asked a gentleman wearing fine clothes and a Rolex to come on stage. It took him a while to get to where Steeleek was standing because of his age, but Mr. George blushed as he heared how they applauded him when he was next to the magician. “Don't make me disappear, or my wife will knock you out with her dentures,” George warned with a chuckle. “It'll be my turn to disappear both of you, then,” Steeleek replied sarcastically. Then, the skilled magician showed the gentleman's beautiful golden watch to the audience, generating a sense of secrecy that soon vanished just by running his hand over the object. Even the elder George could feel his left wrist light. It was total amazement on a pickpocket magic trick. It was enough for Steeleek to snap his fingers for the watch to reappear, but on his own wrist. “Yes, indeed, it is the perfect time for magic,” the magician said after looking at the watch with solemn pose. The audience went bananas, and George broke into applause at the most elegant theft of his life. Steeleek thanked the gentleman's participation, and quickly heeded the call of the Midnight Magic Show host. He ran over and threw himself headfirst onto a big red couch. Mike, the host, got up to see if he had hurt himself, but laughed when he saw that the magician had pulled a rose out of his mouth for him. Mike grabbed it giggling, but it immediately exploded in his face. This drew laughter and applause in equal measure. “Undoubtedly talented, you're the great Steeleek. Welcome, boy!” cried Mike still clapping. “Thank you, this is my first TV appearance,” he replied with teary eyes. "Steeleek, how did it all start? Were you born out of a hat or what?" joked the host to reassure the young magician. “There's a talent for comedy, isn't there?” said Steeleek wiping his cheeks, as he smiled. He sighed deeply and tried to speak as he looked up at the ceiling. "You see, it hasn't all been a bed of roses. Back in the time before I was a magician, I was a canner,“ he confessed to a completely mute audience. ”You are telling me you lived on the street?" asked Mike with a frown. "I didn't have a choice. I never knew my parents. Since I was a kid I hung out with bums, canners and drug addicts," Steeleek suffered. Many in the audience wore dismayed expressions. Others simply followed Steeleek's every word in amazement. This is, it was hard to believe that this elegant man would ever wander the streets dusty, homeless and breadless. “Sometimes it was more than hell,” the young magician added. "What do you mean? Did the police ever stop you?" questioned Mike, adjusting his glasses. "No. I never went to jail, but more than once I was robbed of the cans I collected all day, and went countless hours without food. I was betrayed by those who said they would take care of me," Steeleek shook his head at such memories. Other questions followed for a few more minutes, to which Steeleek responded by detailing seasons of suffering from scabies, freezing to death half-naked in dark blind alleys, and receiving insults from all sorts of people. Mike didn't want to ask any more questions after that. He just stood up and gave his guest that night a big, tight hug. The audience accompanied the gesture with tears and applause. “Thank you for inviting me here,” Steeleek got candid, “I never thought a simple video of me doing little tricks on social media would go viral so much.” “We saw your video. The production guys and I said we finally saw someone hiding things better than the politicians,” Mike confessed to break all sadness. “I started a couple of years ago with magic,” cleared his throat Steeleek, “one day I was bored in a square and realized I could do anything with cans.” “Even money?” smiled Mike again. "That came later, but in the beginning it was all fun. Little aluminum balls multiplying in my hands or can rings popping out of my mouth. People started to love me for the first time ever," Steeleek nodded with a blank stare. “But the key moment came when I collected cans to make soccer balls for homeless kids like me,” Steeleek expressed proudly. “Were they your street friends?” a curious Mike asked. "No. I just saw them wandering around like I was doing, and wanted to give them something to be happy with," replied the magician. “Steeleek, super magician!” they chanted at the Midnight Show. “So,” he continued when the audience fell silent, " I was greeted by a social assistance group that was hanging around. They pulled me out of the streets and have supported my tricks since then, as have you." “Ladies and gentlemen, this is the incredible story of Steeleek, the young magician,” Mike bellowed to dismiss his fantastic guest to a standing ovation from the audience. This little man stood up with hurried steps, shook his hands and blew kisses to thank his new fans. He only looked different at George and pointed to his wrist for his final volunteer to see that he had another watch, but an aluminum one on his right hand. Now perhaps the most expensive aluminum watch around.

La magia de las latas

—Para mi último truco necesitaré a alguien con un reloj—vociferó entusiasta Steelek ante el público sonriente. Muchos levantaron las manos, pero finalmente el joven mago pidió subir al escenario a un señor que vestía ropa fina y un Rolex. Tardó un rato en llegar hasta donde estaba Steeleek por su edad, pero el señor George se sonrojó al notar cómo lo aplaudían cuando estuvo al lado del mago. —No me desaparezcas, o mi mujer te noqueará con su dentadura postiza— advirtió George entre risas. —Me tocará desaparecer a los dos, entonces— replicó Steeleek con sarcasmo. Acto seguido, el habilidoso mago mostró el hermoso reloj dorado del señor al público, generando una sensación de seguirdad que pronto se desvaneció con tan sólo pasar su mano por encima del objeto. Incluso el anciano George pudo sentir su muñeca izquierda ligera. Era un asombro total. Bastó con que Steeleek sonara sus dedos para que el reloj reapareciera, pero en su propia muñeca. —Si, en efecto, es la hora perfecta para la magia— comentó el mago después de ver el reloj con pose solemne. El público enloqueció, y George se deshizo en aplausos ante el robo más elegante de su vida. Steeleek agradeció la participación del señor, y rápidamente atendió el llamado del anfitrión del show de medianoche. Corrió y se lanzó de cabeza en un gran sofá rojo. Mike, el entrevistador, se levantó para ver si se había lastimado, pero rió cuando vio que el mago había sacado una rosa de su boca para él. Mike la tomó muerto de la risa, mas enseguida explotó en su cara. Esto provocó carcajadas y aplausos por igual. —¡Indudablemente talentoso, eres el gran Steeleek, bienvenido, chico!— clamó Mike todavía aplaudiendo. —Gracias, es mi primera aparición en televisión— contestó él con ojos llorosos. —Steeleek, ¿cómo comenzó todo? ¿Acaso naciste de un sombrero o qué?—bromeó el anfitrión para tranquilizar al joven mago. —Hay talento para la comedia, eh—dijo Steeleek secando sus mejillas, mientras sonreía. Él suspiró hondo y trató de hablar mientras veía al techo. —Verás, no todo ha sido color rosa. En el tiempo antes de que fuese un mago, era un recojelatas— confesó ante un público completamente mudo. —Me dices que vivías en la calle— preguntó Mike con ceño fruncido. —No tuve opción. Nunca conocí a mis padres. Desde niño anduve entre vagabundos, recojelatas y drogadictos—adoleció Steeleek. Muchos en el público tenían expresiones consternadas. Otros simplemente seguían cada palabra de Steeleek con asombro. Pues, era difícil de creer que alguna vez este hombre elegante, anduviese polvoriento por las calles sin techo y sin pan. —Algunas veces era más que un infierno—agregó el joven mago. —¿A qué te refieres? ¿Te detuvo la policía alguna vez?—cuestionó Mike, ajustando sus lentes. —No. Nunca fui preso, pero más de una vez me robaron las latas que recogía todo el día, y pasaba incontables horas sin comer. Era traicionado por aquellos que decían que me cuidarían—sacudió Steeleek su cabeza ante semejantes recuerdos. Por algunos minutos más, siguieron otras preguntas a las que Steeleek respondió detallando temporadas en las que sufrió de sarna, moría de frío medio desnudo en callejones sin salida y recibía insultos de todo tipo de personas. Mike no quiso preguntar más después de eso. Sólo se levantó y le dio un abrazo ancho y fuerte a su invitado de aquella noche. El público acompañó el gesto entre lágrimas y aplausos. —Gracias por invitarme aquí—se sinceró Steeleek—nunca creí un simple video mío haciendo truquitos en las redes sociales repercutiría tanto. —Vimos tu video, los de producción y yo dijimos que por fin veíamos a alguien que ocultaba las cosas mejor que los políticos—confesó Mike para quebrar toda tristeza. —Comencé hace un par de años con la magia— aclaró su garganta Steeleek—un día estaba aburrido en una plaza y me di cuenta podía hacer cualquier cosa con las latas. —¿Incluso dinero?—sonrió Mike de nuevo. —Eso vino después, pero la verdad al principio todo era diversión. Pelotitas de aluminio que se multiplicaban en mis manos o anillas de latas que salían de mi boca. La gente me empezó a amar por primera vez— asentía Steeleek con mirada perdida. —Pero el momento clave vino cuando junté latas para hacer balones de fútbol para chicos sin hogar como yo—expresó Steeleek con orgullo. —¿Eran tus amigos callejeros?—curioseó Mike. —No. Sólo los vi vagando como hacía yo, y quise regalarles algo con lo que fueran felices—contestó el mago. —¡Steeleek, super mago!—corearon en el show medianoche. —Entonces yo—prosiguió él cuando el público calló—fui saludado por un grupo de asistencia social que andaba por ahí. Ellos me sacaron de la indigencia y han apoyado mis trucos hasta ahora, como tú. —Damas y caballeros, esta es la increíble historia de Steeleek, el joven mago—vociferó Mike para despedir a su fantástico invitado ante la audiencia que lo ovacionaba de pie. Este hombrecito se levantó con pasos apresurados, sacudió sus manos y lanzó besos para agradecer a sus nuevos fans. Sólo a George miró diferente, y señaló su muñeca para que su voluntario final viera que él tenía otro reloj, pero de aluminio en su mano derecha.
